3 Songs That Make You #Think

You guys like my cool title on this one? I think the, er, sorry – I #think it’s pretty clever and super unique, and I’m using media to the best of my abilities, don’t you agree?

Anywho. There are certain songs that honestly stick a knife in my heart. But like, in a good way? If that’s possible? We all have them. Songs that inspire conversation, deeper thought, inner reflection. And if you’re shaking your head no, that all you listen to is EDM, then fair enough. I would agree, you probably don’t feel many daggers in your soul on any random Tuesday. Get yourself some form of media that stabs you. Join the rest of us. It’s peachy.

1. Noah Gunderson – Jesus, Jesus

(Read all the lyrics here. The verse I’m sharing is probably the easiest to #stomach.)

“Jesus, Jesus, could you tell me what the problem is
With the world and all the people in it?
Because I’ve been hearing stories about the end of the world
But I’m in love with a girl and I don’t wanna leave her
And the television screams such hideous things
They’re talking about the war on the radio
They say the whole thing’s gonna blow
And we will all be left alone
No we’ll be dead and we won’t know what hit us”

2. Neon Cathedrals – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Allen Stone

(This song #challenges me. Grab the lyrics.)

“I read the Bible, but I forgot the verses
The liquor store is open later than the church is
Pured by their imperfections, everything that’s burning
To Hell with the confessions, all the “Lord Have Mercy’s”
Blessed in holy water, the sin, Oh Holy Father
Have you ever smelled flesh that sweats out Monarch vodka?
11 AM in the morning and you can’t get it off ya
Callin’ to the preacher but it’s like the pastor isn’t talking
Until the store opens I can re-up on that doctrine
The people close to me say that I’m in need of a doctor
Think that I got a problem but these are not apostles
This is the drink of the Lord, that’s according to my gospel
Open to interpretation, if you’re judgin’ I don’t want it
I got sins that scold like my throat when I hit the bottle
And I’m sinking and that’s why I keep on drinking
I need a refill, far more than once every weekend
Sweet Jesus, I’m getting amnesia
Shaking ’til I get a taste, my faith is having seizures
Every time I walk away and try to leave it”

3. Propaganda – Forgive Me For Asking

(#woof. lyrics lyrics lyrics!)

“Muslims— excuse my boldness— but what if you’re lying, too?
Like you don’t ever have questions?
As if you’ve never wondered why Allah’s ears only hear directionally
And if you accidentally pointed slightly north easterly then you’ve blasphemed?
As if the thought has never crossed your mind
That the jihadists interpreted the Quran correctly
And you are what we Christians would call ‘lukewarm’?
Which makes you much more like my evanjellyfish churchianity would allow me to admit
And you can call me on it; I’ll deny it, just don’t believe me
Because I’m lying
I strain at gnats, I focus on silliness
I act like God has joined a political party just like you
As if you’ve never thought
“What if I was paralyzed and I can’t make my pilgrimage to Mecca
Yet I follow the text better than my whole family?
Is there enough mercy for me?”

Obviously there are millions of songs that challenge us. I love content that isn’t always easily swallowed. Did any of these resonate with you? What songs in this category do I need to know?

Cheers, happy #thinking!
